7 Super Essential Oils for Sleep To Try in Your Sleep Diffuser Tonight

In a recent post, we discussed making use of a tidy bedroom and a great sleep diffuser to get a better night's sleep. we also mentioned the fact that when it comes to scenting your room for sleep, essential oils work best. Head into any health food store though and you'll see at least several shelves full of different options. So which of these should you be buying to make use of in your new sleep diffuser?

We love essential oils because they help make everyday life easier in all sorts of different ways. And one of those ways is supporting healthy sleep for the whole family. So here is a look at our top 7 essential oils for supporting healthy sleep.

1. Lavender

Oh yes, that this essential oil is great for sleep likely doesn’t surprise you. Lavender is well-known for its relaxing and calming effects on the body. But the reason we love this oil most is it’s safe to use on all ages–babies through adults. And as an added bonus, in addition to supporting healthy sleep, this oil is also a great way to freshen up laundry and fragrance your home without harsh chemicals or synthetics.

2. Frankincense

This is another big favorite of ours. It’s perfect for balancing emotions, supporting healthy sleep, calming your mind and supporting your body’s natural response to healing. Many people find that if their mind won’t 'shut off at bedtime' this is the first oil they reach for because it is very effective and works relatively quickly.

3. Cedarwood

This oil is very cost effective, and it works beautifully. It costs around three pence per drop–a steal in our opinion! Cedarwood essential oil supports the healthy function of the pineal gland, which releases melatonin…the body’s natural sleepy hormones.

One word of warning though. This oil has a unique woodsy scent. Some people love it, some not so much. If you aren’t keen on the smell, mix it with lavender to create a rather delightful, soothing 'sleep blend'

4. Ylang ylang

Ylang ylang means “flower of flowers.” Historically, the ylang-ylang flower has been used to cover the beds of newlywed couples on their wedding night. That’s because this powerful oil is said to balance male and female energies, support focus and restore peace.

5. Marjoram

Marjoram essential oil is steam distilled from leaves and was known as the “herb of happiness” to the Romans and “joy of the mountains” to the Greeks. This oil is extremely soothing and relaxes the nerves, things that will certainly help you get a better night's sleep.

6. Vetiver

Because vetiver essential oil is distilled from the roots of the plant, it smells very rich and earthy. This is another great oil to try for sleep because it is psychologically grounding, calming and stabilizing. It can take you a while to get used to the smell, so if you are a vetiver newbie, you can try mixing it with a floral or citrus oil, such as lavender or bergamot.

7. Roman Chamomile

For centuries, mothers have used this oil to calm children. And what you may not know is that thousands of years ago big burly Roman soldiers used it to calm and centre themselves before a big battle. It's just that good. It has a light, floral scent and is wonderful for creating a peaceful atmosphere in your bedroom and is completely safe to use around kids and pets who usually find (we think) that they like its scent as well.
